St.
Pius X -- CYO Athletic Programs
Code
Of Ethics
Scope:
The purpose of this Code of Ethics is to
translate the philosophy and vision of the St. Pius X Athletic
Committee into practical guidelines for use by coaches, coordinators,
Athletic Committee members, and parents of the young people
participating in our program.
Philosophy and Vision
Statement:
The athletic programs offered and directed
by the St. Pius X Athletic Committee are an extension and expression
of the values upon which our religious beliefs are based. As
such, love of God and love of neighbor are two (2) goals we
strive to attain. It is our intention to provide programs and
direction that allow each child to maximize the talents which
God bestowed. At the same time, all associated with the program
must conduct themselves in a manner that exhibits good sportsmanship
and love of neighbor.
Code:
- Players, coaches, and spectators shall
conduct themselves in a manner that maintains the principles,
integrity, and dignity of their parish.
- Players, coaches, and spectators should
always show an attitude of good sportsmanship and remember
that all groups are not equally talented.
- Non-permissible behaviors are:
- Cheering against opposing teams
- Running up scores
- Showboating or gloating behavior
(i.e. Chest-bumping)
- Players, coaches and spectators shall
respect the activity officials and make sure their players
do the same. Coaches should urge parents to display proper
attitudes. Respectful requests by the coaches for clarifications
on rulings are permitted. Arguing and non-verbal gestures
are unacceptable.
- Players, coaches and spectators shall
always treat coaches and players from opposing teams with
respect and offer help when it is needed. As home team, our
coach should be prepared to greet visiting coaches and make
them feel welcome. Opposing teams should be wished good luck
before a contest and congratulated after a contest regardless
of the outcome. Non-permissible behaviors are:
- Overly aggressive play
- Trash-Talk
- Profanity
- Players and coaches shall always respect
and follow the rules of the game including:
- Strict adherence to CYO rules
- Wearing of approved uniform only
- Players and coaches shall, at all times,
have respect for property.
- Players should always show respect for
their coaches. They should:
- Be on time
- Notify coaches in advance of absences
- Listen when the coach is talking
- Never argue with the coach
Responsibilities and
Authority:
- The coaches will:
- Ensure players are aware of, and adhere
to, the Code of Ethics.

to the Code of Ethics.
- Discipline player violations as described
below.
- Notify the Sport Coordinator of any
disciplinary actions.
- The Sport Coordinators will:

actions taken by the coaches.

one (1) year may be assessed by the full Athletic Committee
for:
- Expulsion from school (automatic)

card will result in a suspension from games until receiving
a "C" average on the next progress report in
the failed subject, or until receiving passing grades on
the next report card (automatic).
- You may practice after receiving an "F"
the first (1) time (at the parents’ discretion). However,
failing to receive a "C" on the next progress report,
or receiving and "F"
on the next report card will result in suspension from practice
as well.
- Single game suspensions may be assessed

St
Pius X Athletic Committee Policies and Resolutions
Program Evaluation (Adopted 1982)
As a matter of overall evaluation
of our sports programs, the Athletic Committee will request
a questionnaire response by the children’s parents, the
children and the coaches.
It is the policy of the St. Pius X Athletic
Committee to have a post season sport evaluation process. We
would like to encourage all to participate in the process.
Your feedback is appreciated. Evaluation forms are available
from coaches and Sport Coordinators. If you have serious concerns
that need to be addressed, please do not wait for the post
season evaluation.
We would like to encourage personal direct
contact where possible:
- For questions about a particular team,
contact the Coach.
- For more general questions about the
sport, contact the Sport Coordinator. You should also contact
the Sport Coordinator for issues that can’t be resolved
with the Coach.
- The Athletic Director can handle general
questions about the sport program. You should also contact
the Athletic Director for issues that can not be resolved
with the Sport Coordinator.
- Issues that cannot be resolved by the
Athletic Director can be put on the agenda for the next
Athletic Committee meeting.
Remember, good people can disagree about
the best way to run a sports program. It may happen that the
current coaches, coordinators and committee members do not
agree with your program proposals. The best way to get your
changes implemented is to become involved in the program by
volunteering and encouraging others of your opinion to do the
same.
Participation Policy (Adopted 1985)
One of the primary purposes of CYO athletics
is for the KIDS! Participation should be encouraged under all
circumstances, however, where the CYO has established a mandatory
participation rule, that rule will take precedence. Whereas
winning is important, it should be understood by all that winning
by character is just as important as winning by numbers. We
are not playing for a million dollars.
Recognition Jackets (Adopted 1986)
Athletic jackets will be offered to all
coaches on a 50/50 cost basis between the Athletic Committee
and the individual coach or assistant coach. Each Sport Coordinator
will be responsible for informing the coaches of the program
and relaying the order to an appropriate person.
Priority for Participation (Adopted
1986)
The following is the priority order for
participation in St. Pius X athletic functions:
- St. Pius X parishioners
- Catholics in other parishes not offering
the sport
- Special courtesy for those who donate
their services to St. Pius X athletics
- Non-parishioners in the parish boundaries
If a cut must be made, follow these priorities.
The Coach and Sport Coordinator, together, will make the final
decision.
Individual Awards (Adopted 1990)
No team will give out individual awards
to players. The exception is the Bud Nye Award given to the
eighth grader who displays the best mental attitude during
the year and is presented at the Honors Banquet.
Disciplinary Policy (Adopted 1991,
Revised 1992)
If a student receives a "D/F" on
a progress report, the student is put on academic and athletic
probation. Participation in games and practices is at the discretion
of the student's parents and teachers.
If a student receives an "F" on
a report card, the student will immediately become ineligible
to participate in all games until one of the following conditions
are met:
- The student receives a solid "C",
or better, on the next progress report.
- The student receives a passing grade
of "D", or better, in all subjects on the next
report card.
This rule applies to all participants whether
a student attends St. Pius X or any other public or private
school. It is the responsibility of all non-St. Pius X students
to provide copies of current report cards.
If a student is required to attend school
on Saturday due to disciplinary problems caused by six (6)
or more behavior demerits, or brings embarrassment or disgrace
while representing St. Pius X Parish and community, an immediate
suspension from athletic participation will be enforced pending
the findings of the Disciplinary Committee.
- The Disciplinary Committee will consist
of the Principal, Athletic Director, Sport Coordinator,
Coach and the parents of the child involved.
- The Disciplinary Committee will meet
within seventy-two (72) hours of the offense.
Awards Program (Adopted 1995)
All athletes grades six (6) through eight
(8) shall receive upon completion of their first athletic season,
a St. Pius X letter. Pins will be awarded for each subsequent
season.
Participants in lower grades shall receive
a ribbon for participation.
St. Pius X Chenille Jacket Emblem is
issued to each Junior High (6th-8th grade)
student who participates in, and completes, a sport. A maximum
of one emblem is awarded per student.
Gold Metal Pin is issued to each
Junior High student who participates in, and completes, a sport.
Students will be awarded one pin for each year of participation
and for each sport.
Purple Cloth Ribbon is awarded to
1st through 5th grade students who participate
in, and complete, a sport. Each ribbon is purple with gold
lettering and contains the St. Pius X Panther head and the
name of the sport.
City Championship Trophy is issued
to each team member who participates in, and completes, a sport
where the team wins an end of the year CYO City-Wide Tournament,
or CYO City-Wide League Championship or a CYO Archdiocesan
Tournament. Only one trophy will be given for one or both tournaments,
but an additional trophy will be given for an Archdiocesan
Championship. The Athletic Committee would prefer these trophies
remain uniform.
- Each trophy will have a gold figure
on the top depicting the sport, a 3-inch purple and gold
striped riser and a white marble or simulated marble base.
The nameplate is gold (or brass) with black lettering.
Participation in Non-CYO Events (Adopted
1996)
Whereas one of the primary purposes of the
St. Pius X Athletic Committee is to sanction parish activities
through the CYO; and whereas the funding and budgeting of parish
teams is predicated upon games and tournaments sponsored by
the CYO and related organizations; and whereas all teams sponsored
by the St. Pius X Athletic Committee should receive nearly
equal opportunities and attention: Be it resolved that the
St. Pius X Athletic Committee will not pay for any individual
team to participate in an event or tournament that is not sanctioned
by the CYO or is not designed for participation by primarily
traditional CYO teams.
Further, because participation in non-sanctioned
events could cause a financial hardship on some families, if
additional fees are collected, any non-sanctioned event or
tournament must be optional to the players with no threat of
repercussions for non-participation.
Additionally, the St. Pius X Athletic Committee
reserves the right to restrict any team from participation
in non-sanctioned events or tournaments if just cause is determined.
The St. Pius X Athletic
Committee acknowledges that although certain sports and activities,
such as, but not limited to, "34" Football and Cheerleading,
do not fall directly under CYO sanction, their normal and traditional
activities are not effected by this motion.
Non-Affiliate Participation
A non-affiliate is defined as a non-parishioner
that lives within the parish boundaries
St. Pius X has adopted the CYO policy. In
accordance with the CYO policy:
- One non-affiliate is allowed per team.
- Non-affiliates who participated in
a parish program prior to the 1994-95 season are considered
the same as parishioners.
- No athlete may participate in a CYO
sport while competing for another school at the same time.
- No athlete may wrestle in a CYO program
if they have wrestled for another school in the same school
year.
In an open meeting on April 14, 1995 the
non-affiliate policies were discussed. It was agreed to keep
the current policy and recommended a registration guideline
be adopted to address concerns raised at that discussion. The
Registration Guideline (Adopted 1996) includes the following
provisions:
- The Sport Coordinators shall determine
the time and the deadline for the sport registration and
advertise the registration in the Parish Bulletin or other
appropriate media. The final deadline for registration shall
be no earlier than the pre-season athlete skill evaluation.
- The Sport Coordinator will determine
the appropriate number of teams based on the number of athletes
registered and the results of the pre-season skills evaluation.
- Affiliates who sign up before the registration
deadline will be guaranteed a place in the program, unless,
based on registration, the Sport Coordinator determines that
there are not enough athletes to enter any teams.
- Since the number of non-affiliates per
team is restricted by the CYO, non-affiliates are not guaranteed
a spot in the St. Pius X program. Non-affiliates will be
placed on teams where spots are available. The non-affiliates
must be placed on a level matching their skill level (i.e. "A" players
must play on "A" teams, etc.)
- It is strongly recommended that all athletes
participate in the pre-season skill evaluation so that proper
team selections can be made. Non-affiliates that did not
participate in the St. Pius X program the previous year will
not be permitted in the St. Pius X program unless they attend
the pre-season skills evaluation.
- Based on the pre-season skills evaluation,
if there are more non-affiliates available at a given skill
level than there are open team spots, the non-affiliates
will be chosen with priority given to the number of years
of participation at St. Pius X. If the numbers of participation
years are equal, the non-affiliates will be selected for
program participation by lot.
Use of the St. Pius X Equipment for Non-Sanctioned
Activities (Adopted 1997)
St. Pius X uniforms and equipment furnished
by the Athletic Committee shall not be used outside of the
CYO season. The uniforms and equipment may be used for non-sanctioned
activities only during the CYO season.
High School Athletic Sport Coordinator (Adopted
1999)
A position of Sport Coordinator for High
School athletic participation has been established. The purpose
of the position is to oversee all St. Pius X CYO sports with
High School student participation. The position will include
all duties and responsibilities of a Sport Coordinator as described
in the Constitution, Bylaws, Policies and Procedures.
Volunteer Background Check Policy (Adopted
2000)
Background checks will be issued on all
volunteer coaches for the St. Pius X Athletic Programs. A background
investigation check refers to the review of police records
to determine if there is a history of criminal activity. A
conviction of a crime does not automatically preclude placement
as a coach. Individual circumstances will be considered.
This policy is implemented as a result of
the CYO and Archdiocese of Indianapolis mandating this procedure
begin in the spring of 2000. A member of the Indianapolis Police
Department will conduct the background investigation and the
results will be sent to the CYO Office. City and State Police
records will be searched, as well as the Indiana Sex Offender
Registry. All of these records are public records.
Practice Policies
The following policy recommendations were
established as the result of discussions between the St. Pius
X School Advisory Board and the St. Pius X Athletic Committee.
These policies have been adopted for the purpose of ensuring
protection of the St. Pius X student athletes.
Students with after school practices or
games at 3:30 will...
- Stay in homeroom until the 3:15 dismissal.
- Go to the gym and be met by the Coach
(or responsible adult) at 3:15. Otherwise the students
must remain seated in the gym until the coach arrives.
- Change clothes in the gym restrooms
after the Coach arrives.
Students with practices or games after 3:30
will...
- Go home, or be signed into extended
care.
- Bring a note from the parents allowing
the child to check himself/herself out of extended care
for activities.
Coaches will ensure the gym is cleaned up
after practice.
A coach, or responsible
adult from the student’s
team, should be present before students are dropped off. Do
not expect coaches from other teams, who are in practice, to
supervise other students.
Students should not be left alone after
practice or other activities. Coaches, or other responsible
adults, should stay with the children until they are picked
up. It is important that parents pick up children on time.
Students should remain in the area of the
scheduled activities and should not roam the halls, the kitchen
or other areas. They may wait in the St. Pius X foyer to be
picked up.
When practicing at locations other than
St. Pius X, students must always remain in the room of the
scheduled activity at all times. Parents should pick them up
at that location.
Athletic Team Selection Guide
Considering that CYO sports are competitive,
St. Pius X will field competitive teams in a manner that puts
the athlete first. St. Pius X will follow a course that gives
every athlete his or her greatest opportunity to excel.
St. Pius X will form teams that place athletes
at their appropriate level (A, B, C) based on athletic skill.
Typically one "A" team is formed
at the Cadet and "56" level. Multiple numbers of
teams are typically formed at the "B" and "C" levels.
It is preferable to create
a "second
tier" "A"
team if a sufficient number of "A" athletes remain
after the first team is selected.
It is not necessary to form
a "C" team
if all athletes are capable of competing at the "B" level.
The preference is to challenge the athletes rather than win
a sure championship at the "B"
or "C" level.
St. Pius X will comply with CYO rules for
playing time for participants of all sports. Where multiple
teams are required, we will have an appropriate number of team
members to maximize playing time for all participants, while
compensating for absenteeism and maintaining sufficient numbers
for effective practice.
The recommended number of team members per
sport is:
- Kickball 12 to 14
- Basketball 8 to 10
- Volleyball 8 to 11
- Baseball 12 to 15
- Soccer 15 to 20
- Football 24 to 40
Fees
Participation fees are charged to individuals
participating in each St. Pius X athletic event. The fees are
designed to compensate the CYO for team entry fees, participation
fees, game fees, umpire fees, gym rental etc.
The fees charged and collected do not cover
the entire cost of participation in the sports and are supplemented
by funds raised by the St. Pius X Booster Club through various
fund-raising activities.
We encourage you to support St. Pius X Booster
Club sponsored functions. |
